I am an instructional paraprofessional at an elementary school. My Computer Lab was recently changed into a STEM Lab. I see 130 students from Kindergarten to fifth grade each day. I have limited time between grade level changes for clean up and set up. My students need exploratory kits to use.
I see every student in our school once a week.
Students come to me for a 45 minute session. During that time I introduce them to a new STEM concept, show them their materials/equipment and give them a challenge. They spend their remaining class time working towards a solution.
This is our first year using a STEM curriculum with our students. They love the new challenges and get very excited about learning the new concepts. We've been exploring different Math lessons, Science theories and even begun computer coding lessons. So far the school has been pooling supplies and asking for donations to work on our Science projects. I would love for my students to have ample supplies without having to worry about running out of things. They will benefit from having complete kits with everything needed included.
My Project
My classroom is setup with 7 work areas for students to work on main projects. I have areas around the room available for center activities. These centers will be used for students that finish their assignments early or for students that require differentiation based on IEP goals. Students will work with partners and in small groups to explore these kits and complete the lessons introduced in them.
These Science kits will allow my students to reach new heights in their education.
By giving my classes the exposure to different Science concepts through these kits I will be able to give them the skills they will need to grow and learn so they can compete in a global environment in the future. My hope is to inspire them today to become tomorrow's scientists, doctors and engineers.
