Student Reporting Lab: Student Journalism for Civic Literacy
My students need a starter camera kit with a memory card, microphone and tripod and a desktop computer to start filming and editing their news stories.
Think. Create. Inform. That is what I want my students to be able to do. Through partnering with PBS NewsHour's Student Reporting Lab, my students will have an opportunity to gain critical thinking and communication skills while producing original news reports. Please help bring SRL to my school.
My students are interested in the current events around them but they also want to have a voice in the public dialogue around these events.
By funding this project, you're arming them with tech tools necessary to produce original news reports from their own communities. Show my students that you believe in the power of their voices. My students are motivated, intelligent, and hungry for engaging reading. Our school is a public, urban, inquiry-driven, project-based small school that attracts students from all over the city. Half of the students are on free/reduced lunch. Most, if not all, are college-bound. I believe in the power of my students' voices and I think the world needs to hear their point of view on current events. Through this unique partnership with PBS NewsHour, my students will learn the skills to produce informative news stories.
My Project
PBS NewsHour's Students Reporting Lab is generously giving us their time and expertise via mentoring my students, now we need you to help us get our Student Reporting Labs off the ground by funding our first camera kit and a desktop computer to be able to edit our videos. This starter camera kit will arm my students with the tech tools they need to learn important skills such as script writing, video editing, sound editing, framing, recording, transitions, voice over, and many more. They need the tools that are used in the media industry to understand this technical concepts and master them. More importantly, my hope is that my students will become informed and engaged citizens by producing news stories that affect their neighborhoods. If you believe in the power of young people's voices to change and transform the public dialogue, please consider donating to this project.
Your donation will help bring PBS NewsHour's Student Reporting Labs to my school and it will help my students become storytellers, journalists, and news reporters.
It will make my students' lives better because they won't just be listen or watch the news being reported, instead, they will contribute their own stories and voices to public dialogue in our country.
