This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 10th/11th grade students typically arrive in my classroom 2-5 grades behind in reading. They struggle in English, history, and other subjects because they have trouble decoding the texts that they are required to read.

My students are classified as high poverty.

They live in an inner city area in California that has high rates of everything negative -- crime, mortality, incarceration, teen pregnancy, unemployment, dropout rate, etc. The effect of these challenges, none of which are their fault, on their education is enormous. Despite a talented and dedicated teaching staff, our school has one of the lowest academic levels in the state. Despite it all, they are mostly good kids who deserve much better than they have. They need as much extra help as anyone can give them, and so we who teach there are looking for as many ways to give this extra help as we can.

My Project

Studies show that one of the best ways for struggling adolescent readers to improve is to read along in a text while simultaneously listening to an expert read it to them. Audio versions of appropriate, grade-level texts are easy to acquire at low or no cost on the Internet, but I need an iPod so that I can store them and play them during class for my students.

This project will help my students in at least two ways.

By helping them read our required grade-level materials, students will be able to attain greater comprehension and thus better classroom achievement. Also, by helping them improve their decoding and vocabulary skills, it will help them not only in my class their year, but in all their classes, now and in the future, and in their future employment opportunities.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
