Ms. Wilson from Richmond VA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need help paying for a trip Florida that will help them see life science concepts first hand.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Many of my students have never left the state of Virginia more less seen a shark or ocean up close and personal. Traveling to Florida to swim with manatees and conduct dissections is a once in a lifetime opportunity that needs outside support. Please, help.
My students are inner-city kids many of which reside in public housing developments and belong to single parent families.
Many of these families are unable to provide family trips out-of-state or in state that expose them to the exciting views of science in nature. My students are very inquisitive and enjoy hands-on learning experiences. Their eyes light up when they see pictures of exotic animals or videos of scientific concepts. However, our school is a Title I school that has a large economically disadvantaged population and the funding towards hand-on science is limited. Many times, I purchase things for my classroom to create make-shift labs.
These funds will help my students afford the trip out of state to Tampa, FL. Students will be able to touch exotic wildlife in the Florida ecosystem while visiting the Crystal Springs Preserve and snorkeling with manatees. Students will dissect sharks and squid while engaging in food chain lessons. They will visit the beach along the Gulf Coast and pet sting rays They will also embark on an African Safari journey and lay eyes on many fascinating animals including white rhinos, zebras, and giraffes. They will be able to combine their book knowledge regarding body systems in organisms with the physical anatomy observed during their dissections. They will identify and explain interactions happening within the marine ecosystems as well as in the Serengeti Plain. They will also correctly classify organisms into the correct phyla and divisions. They will do all of this in a way that they could not do it in Virginia. Face-to-face and hands-on. Then, they will share their experiences.
The donations for this project will extend the walls of my classroom so they include ecosystems outside of my surrounding area.
This money will allow students the time and resources to complete dissections, which do not fit into the normal curriculum. Students will be able to see how fun and exciting science can be. Hopefully, it will spark their interest and motivate them to pursue a career in STEM or Science. It will provide them exposure so that they can compete with students worldwide.
