Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have been preparing for college for 4 years. The only thing that stands in their way is managing the stress of college application season! In my college-readiness seminar class, August through November is high stakes and stress level is through the roof. I want to change that!
I work for a nationally recognized public charter school.
We set lofty goals for our students--100% of our graduates are accepted to a 4-year competitive college or university; 95% of our students will matriculate to college within 1 year of high school graduation; and 87% of our alumni will earn their college degree within 6 years of high school graduation. These goals are even more ambitious when you consider the population of students we service. Our students spent their formative years in a failing school district that was consistently the lowest performing school district in the state. They arrive in 9th grade with many academic deficits, but with the common goal of obtaining a college degree. They are a gritty, dedicated, and determined bunch of kids who are committed to transforming their community through the power of education.
My Project
I am requesting materials that will help to create a space for seniors to retreat to during the stress of applying to college. Currently, our college corner houses 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students working on various stages of college readiness. We serve approximately 200 students in this space, and there's really no "quiet space." The white noise machine, therapy lamp, electric kettle (for making tea), and bean bag chairs will help to create a no-stress zone!
Most of my students are low-income, first-generation college students.
We provide time and space during the school day for working on applications because many of them don't have a quiet, functional space to work at home. By donating to this project, you'll be helping me to create opportunities that will transform their lives, their families, and their community.
