About My Students

My student who is promoting this is a senior and is using this for his senior project. He is excited to be able to help set up the student lounge. This is important because it rewards positive student behaviors. It encourages the student to try harder to be positive and productive.

The student thought of this because our school is trying to create a space for students to socialize. He did a survey of the students to find out what games the kids wanted. He analyzed the data and then planned the shopping list for the desired games. He is producing fliers to distribute to try to raise support. He will be searching to find a storage unit to house the games and plans to monitor the care of the games throughout the year. The student shopped in the online store to find the best buys in order to maximize the value and price of the games. Part of his planning included checking with the school staff to see if it was alright to do the project and to do the survey during one of the town council meetings at the school. He included his homeroom class in ideas and had a group project to decide how to run the survey. He used the SMART Board to shop with his peers input.

With having the opportunities to socially interact with other peers in an appropriate manner, the students will be able to practice social skills that will be needed when they are young adults. They will be able to practice using cognitive strategies in the games as well as working on their communication skills. By having the student lounge that they are responsible for, they will work on keeping it clean, picked up and organized, which will be skills needed in university dorms and on the job. They will learn to demonstrate fairness in playing the games as well. As it will be rewarding, students must be current on work and in good behavioral standings with the school to use the lounge. They will work on empathy because our special needs students are included and they will be building relationships as well as working on teamwork with some of the games.

In Their Own Words

Our school is in need of a student lounge for students who are showing good behaviors, have a good attitude and are caught up on school work. It will be a space to hang out at lunch time and have activities that they can do together. We want to have games that they can use to socialize with others. This will allow students to form extra curricular clubs to play competitive games. Having a student lounge will encourage student to try harder.

First I needed to do a survey to vote on what games the students want. Second, there needed to be a count of the votes to determine the games that will be purchased. After the items are ordered, I will make posters to promote the project and raise funds to make it happen. I will distribute the posters throughout our small town. If need I will do additional fundraising to help with it. As a leader in this project, I will help set up and keep the games organized throughout the year.

My project is important to me because I am doing it as my senior project and I need it for graduation. It is important to our school because we are a small rural alternative school and the students need a place to gather with activities to work on social skills. Activities are needed during lunch that are positive with their friends. Our students at the school need to be rewarded for their accomplishments and positive behaviors. It will help to keep attitudes positive and decrease bad behavior.
