Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 30 very active students. We are constantly transitioning because many students do not have the stamina and the attention span to stay focused.
My students live in poverty and all of them qualify for free lunch.
They are very resilient and adaptable because despite personal challenges, they arrive at school every day eager for new experiences. Our school is the most diverse in southern Arizona- we have families from all over the world. I teach a "mainstream" class so I teach native English speakers and English as a Second Language students who have demonstrated proficiency in English. One third of my class speaks another language besides English at home. We learn guitar once a week through a program from the local university. We also have a visual artist visit us weekly who integrates math and science into her art lessons.
My Project
I have been reading many articles that hypothesize the reasons children have a difficult time sitting still. One reason that made sense to me was that lack of strength in children's core muscles prevents them from keeping their bodies still. I implement core strengthening exercises (plank, somersaults), but the equipment I requested can enhance our exercises. The chair cushions will be rotated throughout the class and the playground balls will be used for games for students to cross the midline. I also requested a few "bouncy bands" for my extra wiggly students. These slide on the front legs of the chair and allow children to fidget their legs and feet.
We are taking a state mandated test in two months on the computer.
The students are expected to be able to sit most of the day at the computer for three days (reading, math and writing). If 3rd graders do not pass this test, they will be automatically retained. My students tend to rush through anything that requires them to sit still for longer than 15-20 minutes. I am hoping that using this equipment will help my students maintain focus and do well on the test.
