"I need you to be clever, Bean. I need you to think of solutions to problems we haven't seen yet. I want you to try things that no one has ever tried because they're absolutely stupid."
~Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game
My school is an exciting and innovative place to learn.
So many teachers are stepping up to the plate and integrating innovative ways to reach students, often using technology in the classroom. However, many of my students find school to be boring, too easy, or uninteresting. They hunger for opportunities to be creative and to learn in new environments where they can be challenged and develop skills at the level and pace they need. They are precocious, competitive, and perfectionists.
My Project
About every two weeks I pull groups of 7th grade Challenge students during Prime Time, a 45 minute class designed to encourage reading and math enrichment. The group of students I work with don't usually need reading or math remediation, but need the opportunity to apply and develop skills not often taught in the classroom. For a semester, we will be using a variety of board games to develop strategy, decision-making skills, creativity, and math application.
Students will not only have fun playing games like Cribbage, Settlers of Catan, Chess, and Ticket to Ride and leave my class stronger critical thinkers, but they will also leave with knowledge of games they can then share with family and friends.
Help me invest in my students' lives by giving them a myriad of ways they can spend quality time with their friends and family while enriching their education.
