Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
1200+ students walk through my classroom each week. I get thirty minutes a week to engage my students through the various tools technology offers them. If they walk out my door and I have not engaged their minds and hands, I have failed. Failure is NOT an option.
Each of my students are unique, but share a common goal when they walk into my computer lab, and that is to learn.
Well, and have fun too. My philosophy is, "Why not do both?" A large portion of our elementary school population do not have access to technology outside of the school due to financial reasons. The thirty minutes I get with them may be the only time they will get to learn about it. Our school mission is, "Educational Excellence for All Learners to be Successful Citizens." Computer Science education is an integral part of our school mission!
My Project
I have been approved by my administration to start a computer club where some of my students will experience unique experiences outside of the computer lab activities. I have many goals for them, but the two immediate goals are to teach coding and robotics.
The six LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots that I have requested are a critical element of the program. The students will experience new ways to solve problems that can be applied in and out of the classroom. It is my goal to improve my students' critical thinking skills in unique ways.
It is my belief that students learn better using an hands-on approach.
Technology Education teaches students about the human made world and it helps them to become technologically literate in today's advanced world.
I would like to offer my students experiences that are far from the cookie cutter models we see take place in the traditional computer lab classroom. Total immersion in their own learning is my ultimate goal.
