My Students

"I became an artist for the same reason I became a writer: I wanted to tell my story," said contemporary artist Faith Ringgold. What a better way to let kids express their ideas through art, but by creating symbolic narrative quilts that reflect their own personal stories and life experiences!

These students are beginning artists.

They attend a public school of approximately 2200 students. They are funny, witty and they love to create. Some of them are taking art classes because it fulfills the fine art high school requirement, but most are here because they want a fun class that will help them appreciate art in the world.

My Project

We are asking Disneyland Create Grants to provide materials for our students to create hand painted quilts that depict each student's personal story. I believe students have a need to communicate their ideas through art. In this project students will learn about classical traditions of African design by researching artwork by Faith Ringgold and Romare Bearden. Students will increase literacy skills by writing an essay about their own life experiences. They will create a beautiful narrative quilt that symbolizes events in their own lives. I believe this project will help students take a good look at their own family history and life goals, while also creating an awareness of the issues facing many of their fellow students. This project heavily supports CA VAPA Standards, especially within the Historical and Cultural Context. Some of these VAPA Standards include: 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 3.1, 3.4, 4.1, and 4.5. This project will be implemented in art classes in the month of March.

This project not only includes writing, reading, and art history, but it enriches student learning by letting students explore their own family traditions.

Narrative quilting is fun and personal, and I believe the students will be very excited to take the quilts home to show their families. These quilts will be ready just in time for Mother's Day! What a coincidence!
