Stop Bullying By Using Award Winning Books

My students need award winning books to use as anti-bullying curriculum.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book about characters that were facing struggles just like your own? Books have the ability to meet students right where they are. Books can teach students that bullying is wrong.

I teach in a low income district in the Midwest where more than half of my students receive free or reduced lunch.

There is a huge emphasis on meeting state mandates for reading testing but little budget for supplies to meet the needs of students. The best way to get better at reading is by reading. My students are eager to read. I just need the high interest books that will keep them coming back for more. I also want books that can be used in our anti-bullying curriculum.

My Project

Each year, Missouri schoolchildren in grades 4-8 vote for their favorite book from a list of nominated titles. The Mark Twain Award is awarded to the author of this book by the Missouri Association of School Librarians. To be eligible to vote, students must have read at least three of the titles on the list. Each year the Mark Twain Award nominees are the most talked about books among my students. Everyone wants to read them, but they are always checked out at the library. I would like to provide the books for this year's list, as well as past award winners, to my students, so they can read them and vote. These books all deal with timely topics and teach students how to get along. I will use these books as part of our anti-bullying curriculum.

Quality literature is priceless in the classroom.

Great books can inspire students to do great things. The Mark Twain Award books are the kind of books that are needed in every classroom library. By providing these titles for my students, you will be helping my students to be eligible to vote for the Mark Twain Award Book. More importantly, though, you will be providing quality literature to students that they will remember for a lifetime.
