Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what is was like to do boring warm up activities in PE class when you were a kid? That's not happening in my class. We do a fun circuit training warm-ups every day to get our bodies warmed up. Kids need to be exposed to new and exciting ways to exercise or they become unmotivated.

Our school is located in the heart of a large metropolitan city in Washington state.

The setting is a culturally diverse school with students from over 20 countries. They speak over 15 different languages. We serve over 220 kids. The majority of our population has lived in the US less than 2 years. Many of them have been here for only a few months. And some of our kids have not been in a formal educational setting before, let alone a PE class. The schools goal is to provide as many traditional American activities for our students as possible. One of the most traditional classes offered through the years has been PE.

My Project

My class is like the circus, because there is always so much activities and excitement going on. The students are excited to come to PE every day. We need 2 set of balance trainers to complete our circuit training course. Circuit training allows our students to get their bodies moving in a fun way. It's not mundane or boring to them. PE class is never boring in my class. I always want to make the activities enjoyable for my students. Instead of having the kids run laps around the gym, we have them use circuit training equipment to go under and around. They lift and throw different balls at targets. They climb and balance on different objects for their circuit training activity. The nice thing about it, is they really enjoy it. They don't realize they are doing cardiovascular activities. It's fun for them. As we move through the course each day, I make sure they check their target heart rate. Every student is expected to work and stay within their target heart rate range.

Physical education has changed since you and I were a kid.

The days of just throwing out the balls and letting the students play are gone. We need to challenge them daily to engage them in physical activity. If we make the activities fun, they will participate. Please help us, help our non American born students develop the passion for PE and lifetime fitness activities. Your donation will be greatly appreciated
