This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Of the 20 fastest growing careers, 15 of them require a background in math and science." -National Math and Science Initiative. For this reason, I want to expose my students to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities in our classroom.
As an educator at a Title 1 school, I serve children and families from low income backgrounds.
Many of my students go without quality learning materials at home. Therefore, it is important that I provide quality hands-on materials for them at school. This is often difficult because funding is limited. Our classroom has to share one science kit with three other classrooms. Having a new STEM activity kit for our classroom will help cultivate a love of science and math in my students.
My Project
My students lack a lot of background knowledge in math and science. Because students are required to take a test in science at the end of 5th grade, it is important for me to set the foundation of their scientific knowledge. The STEM learning labs will provide my students with not only hands-on materials, but also the opportunity to work collaboratively.
My students will be challenged to think critically, as they develop problem solving skills which are very important for the 21st century learner. These learning labs will challenge the most advanced students by allowing them to create such things as roller coasters and devices to test out Newton's law of motion and electrical currents. After exploring and learning using the STEM learning labs, my students can read about different STEM careers using the colorful books from the career book set.
