Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Edudemic reports that the critical skills students are missing to be successful in the workplace are leadership, digital literacy, problem solving, collaboration, analytical and evaluation and communication skills. This is even more exaggerated in high poverty areas so we are starting a STEM class.

Our school is in a high poverty area.

Our budget is very small so most of our resources are bought from local discount stores or added to my grocery cart. I have seen students work together on simple projects to design by sketching ideas, build a project, then redesign and rebuild the project. The students learned so much that I want to extend that learning with a STEAM designed and STEM created project using technology. The world is using technology in every area but very few of my students even have computers at home so they are far behind in tech skills. I want to include robotics in the new class that uses computer coding to control the machine. The students will use art to draw a design for the robot so they can visualize what they will then build using science, technology, engineering and math skills. The project gives them the opportunity to learn to work in groups and strengthen their critical-thinking and creative problem-solving skills as well as reflect on their performance.

My Project

The project will use art to design and STEM to build STEAM machines to bring technology to our classroom. The machines provides engaging, hands-on introduction to technology and essential STEM-related concepts which supports the development of skills and conceptual understanding in science, math, and technology education as well as intellectual development in language and applied arts, collaboration, and comprehension of societal implications. This project increases digital literacy by having students program the software to control the machines. This project allows students to increase their understanding of science concepts, the basic processes and principles of scientific thinking as well as the critical skills that are needed to be successful in the workplace. This project will be an essential part of our new STEM class to help our high poverty students learn these critical skills, become prepared for the workplace and become a vital part of and give back to their community.

The project will have students use art to design machines so they can visualize what they will then build using science, technology, engineering and math skills.

The project gives them the opportunity to learn to work in groups and strengthen their critical-thinking and creative problem-solving skills as wells as reflect on the performance and what they could do to improve it. These critical skills that are missing in high poverty areas will help students be successful in the workplace and life.
