I can't remember who recommended this book to me, but I wish I could thank them. This story is gracefully moving, and will impact my students in a meaningful and academic way. It has hooked some of my most reluctant readers, and convinced them that books and reading are powerful.
My students are a mix of cultural and socio-economic groups.
They attend a public middle school trying to show them as much hope as we can during the hard economic times. Because many of our students are English language learners or don't have access to books at home, reading has become a large focus in our school and district.
My Project
We learn from our darkest moments. We learn from our survival tales. We are inspired and moved by tales of compassion where compassion is hard to find. That is the story given by "The Book Thief." This tale is a fresh look at the Holocaust from a very unique point of view.
I've always believed that if I could find the right story for the right reader, I can convince any student that reading is worthwhile. This book has helped me convince some of my most reluctant readers to engage in reading. I would like to share this inspiring tale (and great "gateway" book) to students on a broader scale.
My students will be reading, analyzing, and writing responses to the text. We incorporate speeches, essays, art, and film into our Holocaust literature unit so students are exposed to the content through multiple avenues. When available, Holocaust survivor speeches are made available to students in addition to our normal materials.
Your donations can help change the hearts of students.
Together, we can teach them about the harm of hate in our world, and the power of the written word.
Be the source of that inspiration. Be the source of that change of heart and mind. Please help my students. Thank you.
