My students are always moving and grooving in my classroom. My biggest challenge, on some days, is getting the wiggles out while we learn. If students could stand while they work, they could move as needed and not disturb those around them. They sit still all day, they need a chance to move!
Energetic.
That is one word I think I have used more over the past few months. My students are just that! I design activities for the students to get up and move when I can. But, there are times we need to have lessons that require them to pay attention and that, traditionally, means sitting. I would love for my students to have the opportunity to stand when they want so they aren't plastered to their chairs the entire time in my classroom. I can tell that my students are tired of sitting as the day goes on. They get more fidgety. They make up reasons to get out of their seats so they can move.
My Project
By having the ability to stand and work at the same time, I believe my students will accomplish more during class. Not to mention, stay focused. Students need to move around. Sitting is very overrated! By standing, students can "get the juices flowing" and work in a way that could help them in the long run. Studies have shown that sitting can do more harm to a body - I want to help my students (and help their grades!).
None of the classrooms in the building have standing desks.
I would love to start a trend by converting some of ours! Students deserve to be the best they can be, and if I can help them get there, why not be the trend setter? My students love coming to my class, but if I can get them a bit more excited by offering a learning differentiated setting, I know they will succeed! If making one change, by standing to learn, can help grow a student, I want to be a part of that!
