My students need a variety of materials and ways in which to meet their sensory needs in the classroom. This includes the workstations to complete these tasks.
Imagine walking into your classroom everyday, the same room you've had since you started Kindergarten, and knowing that you are going to struggle. This is the reality that my students face on a daily basis. My students consist of different grade and age levels but they all struggle with learning the general education curriculum, due to a variety of disabilities.
Even with their daily struggles my students are willing to work hard, even when the task seems insurmountable.
Embracing different ways to access curriculum and trying hard to not only learn reading, writing, and math but social and life skills is a daily task my students take head on. With the tasks that are given to them, my students often need to have a short break in order to regain focus. These sensory breaks help my students to regain focus by allowing them to get their various sensory needs met. When these sensory needs are met my students are better able to focus, stay on task, and continue their learning.
My Project
My students thrive when given the ability to explore their sensory needs in the classroom. This time allows them to regain their focus so they can complete their learning tasks. Having the four sensory tables, that are movable, will allow for different sensory activities to take place that meet my students individual needs. They will also allow the opportunity for my students to move away from their academic area and into a different part of the classroom as well as allowing access for my students whom use a wheelchair.
The ability to meet the individual sensory needs will greatly increase my student's ability to focus on their learning and achieve great things.
These bins will be used on a daily basis and, I know, my students will greatly enjoy the opportunity to increase their sensory input.
