My Students

What's more exciting than reading a great story? Sharing the experience with others! Some of my students love to read, some like to read, and some read because...well...I make them. They all need books and stories that pique their interest and keep them reading.

The students in my 6th and 7th grade English Language Arts class are diverse and energetic.

They are open to trying new things and very curious. Since they are in middle school, they are all facing the daily challenge of constantly growing, changing and exploring their identity. While they have that in common, they are a socio-economically, linguistically, and culturally diverse group of learners.

My Project

The more opportunities my students have to read stories that help them feel more connected to themselves and others, the better. My students spend a lot of energy thinking about how they are different from one another, but when they read the same story and then have a chance to talk about it, they find more connections than they ever expected. These books will be used for students to read and then discuss in literature groups. Some students will read novels, some will read short stories, and some will read newspaper articles. They will then prepare discussion questions and meet to talk about what they've read. The questions will touch on key vocabulary, themes, main ideas and character development. Through planning and discussion, my students find deeper meaning and connections with what they've read.

The key to keep students reading is to keep them interested.

Your contribution will help keep my classroom library fresh and interesting for my current and future students! Sometimes finding just the right book can turn a reluctant reader into a lifelong reader. These books and stories could spark one my students and truly make a difference in their learning. Thanks for considering a contribution to our class!
