Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever sat in a plastic chair, only to have that chair pinch you because of a crack? How about write on a desk top that isn't smooth or wobbles while you write? My students face these distractions every time they sit in a desk.

The majority of my students are from low income homes.

They are good kids, who do not come from great backgrounds. They need every advantage they can to succeed. They thrive on interaction, on success, and must have every opportunity to be successful in gaining the knowledge to prepare them for the careers of tomorrow. This includes being comfortable in their surroundings.

My Project

The majority of my students come from low income homes. There are many in our school that come from military families, from single family homes, from homes where education takes a back seat to trying to put food on the table, and where because of these things, and many others, they do not get much one on one attention at home. Having the ability to give them a sense of ownership in the new desks and security that the desks won't fall on them, pinch them, or wobble when they lean to write will make a difference in their attitudes.

Creating an comfortable environment in my classroom is something I strive for every year.

Trying to decide what to put on the walls is something I can control. Adding extra lighting, I can control. I cannot control the condition of the furniture I receive from the school. With new desks my students would have the proper sitting arrangements, a better overall classroom environment, and a reason to have pride in the classroom and ownership.
