My Students

Have you ever watched a 6th grader? They are in constant motion. They need to move, move, move, and we ask them to sit, sit, sit.

My sixth graders this year and the ones I am anticipating for 2012-2013 are typical sixth graders.

They are eager to learn and eager to move. Our statewide test scores are improving, but overall we have not performed well on statewide exams in reading and math. As a social studies teacher, I will continue to do my part to teach reading and content on a daily basis.

My Project

Brain research has proved that students need to be literally active learners. Oxygen needs to get to their brains. Connect this research with growing 6th graders and you can understand why they need to move throughout the day. I would like to add 8 high step exercise boxes to my classroom to provide students a chance to read and move, or watch a movie and move, or listen to a class discussion and move. The high step boxes will be in the back of the room. Students will take turns using them. (I am sure some will tire more easily than others.)

Allowing students to move appropriately while they are in class will teach them appropriate ways to let out their energy and help them stay stimulated in class.

I hope the high step boxes will help provide students with a sound body, as I help them get a sound mind.
