"We are dangerous when we are not conscious of our responsibility for how we behave, think, and feel."- Marshall B. Rosenberg
Our Elementary was built in 1939 among large, old Live Oak trees.
Our students are from families with a wide range of nationalities, ethnicities, and languages. Our school celebrates that diversity and the value it brings to the education of our students. Tomorrows world will need citizens who cooperate rather than compete, who appreciate people of different cultures and divergent views, who know how to cooperatively solve problems and who are able to build communities based on interdependency and mutual respect.
My Project
"Bibliotherapy is the process of using books to help children think about, understand, and work through social and emotional concerns. Reading with children can be therapeutic. Adults can use reading to help children come to grips with issues that create emotional turmoil for them. Reading can also be very effective in preventing and resolving behavior problems." - from Positive Child Guidance by Darla Ferris Miller.
Young children can experience challenges as they struggle with their own lives and the expectations of others. Reading about characters in similar situations can help them cope. After each story, students will engage in hands-on games and role-playing to reinforce the social skills presented promoting classroom community.
These books will help my students recognize and manage emotions, solve problems effectively and establish positive relationships with others.
This direct instruction in social skills will enable students to succeed in college, career and life by being responsible citizens and decision makers. Students will see themselves and others in a positive light, manage emotions, set and achieve goals and solve problems they encounter effectively.
