My students need paper and markers to create visual projects, highlighters to promote critical/active reading skills, and books to promote our theme of social justice.
My students desire to learn and to be successful. They are hardworking, persevering, and caring students, though many also feel defeated in life. Many of my students will be first generation high-school graduates and even more of them potential first generation college students.
My students are overcoming obstacles such as being English Language learners, having to work two jobs after school, taking care of their family members, poverty, learning disabilities, sleep deprivation, etc.
54% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are working hard to learn what they can, and I would like to watch them continue in their path towards becoming successful high school students and, some day, college graduates.
My Project
My students bring with them many different experiences that heighten every one's experience. We also work to show them different perspectives and experiences through the books we read. Reading is a crucial part of our English class. We read books together and independently with the thought that reading helps us understand literary terms and functions but also other people’s view about the world. Our enduring understanding in English 1 is “What responsibilities do we have in regard to social justice, and how can literature promote social change?” We talk about many different, difficult themes through the books and additional texts we read, all around the idea of identity and social justice, and respecting and learning from other people’s identities and perspectives. In order to promote a collaborative work environment, my students need chart paper, markers, and highlighters for active reading, group work, and presentations. My students need post-it paper and markers for presentations.
Throughout our class, we give them opportunities to build critical reading skills to better their ability to formally present information.
We want to keep giving them opportunities to learn more about their world and about different perspectives in order to become critical thinkers and contribute to social justice in our world. The books will be sources used to supplement the class texts, and will promote our theme of social justice while also promoting critical discussions among peers.
