Smart Board, Dumb Computer

My students need a new classroom laptop so we can use our Smart Board and Smart Board Software more effectively.

My Students

How can we use great software to increase student learning when our hardware is too outdated to keep up? We are fortunate enough to have a Smart Board (an electronic white board), but our students cannot use it to its full potential because our classroom laptop can't handle the new technology.

My School of Advance Studies students, composed of gifted and special ed students alike, share a team of teachers who work tirelessly to ensure that we give them all that the educational world has to offer.

We live in a low poverty area, and because our test scores are so much higher than the district average, we are low priority to our public school district, and do not qualify for funds that are often allocated to Title 1 schools. We recently acquired a set of old laptops as a donation from a private school, but every one of them turned out to be unusable because the hardware was almost as old as the students themselves. So, we rely heavily on an old HP that frequently shuts down and cannot accept the newest software available for our recently acquired Smart Board, which reduces the amount of time being spent actually teaching and learning while we trouble shoot problems with the laptop throughout the day.

My Project

With a new laptop, my students would be able to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical concepts in diagrams, pictures, words and algorithms all at once, by using the Smart Board. They would save their work on the hard drive to be printed later for their portfolios, and have access to the information electronically throughout the unit. This would enable them to better communicate their learning with others, increase their confidence when speaking in front of large crowds when the "teach" one another their process, force them to prove their solutions with evidence, and allow them to be assessed for their knowledge without having to take another standardized test. Furthermore, for the kids watching the student demonstrate their process on the board, it would increase their attention on the task at hand because the novelty of using technology is always a good motivator for students in the classroom.

Having a Smart Board is wonderful.

I am fortunate to have been able to receive one from a technology grant that was written for our school. However, we cannot harness the full potential and power of the Smart Board without being able to use the latest software. Your donation would make a difference to us on a daily basis, as it is the primary way we communicate our learning to one another, especially during math when complex ideas must be seen to be understood.
