Simple Things for Extraordinary Students

My students need 10 materials such as pencil grips and interactive reading games that will assist them with every day activities and allow them to function as independently as possible.

Simple things for extraordinary students! The extraordinary students in my classroom range in age from 6 to 14 and have varying disabilities along with autism. I currently have 9 wonderful students, most of whom have been in the same classroom for consecutive years. My classroom is in an elementary school that houses grades K-8 and is located in a very high-need rural area.

The faltering economy has shown to be a tremendous burden on school's and especially the special education department. The district in which I teach had to send back over $200,000 to the state, which left many classrooms with great needs. The items that my students need are not extras, these are things that will enable them to participate fully in the academic and social environment of school. Children with autism face many things in their daily environment that seem normal to us, but are overstimulating to them. The items that my students need will help them cope with these stimuli.

The Cozy Shades and Grab and Go balls are sensory items that help students with autism when they become overstimulated. The lights in our classroom are fluorescent and before overpowering after a short time, but the Cozy Shades will help filter the light and create a calming environment. Students with autism generally have communication difficulties and for some, they have limited verbal skills. That is where the GoTalk will allow those students to participate in daily group activities through selecting an answer and having their "voice" heard. The remaining items will help each student become successful in an area in which they are struggling. For some students that might be writing their name, eating their lunch independently, or answering questions.

The help that you give these extraordinary students will not only help them to achieve academic success, but it will empower them to become independent in tasks that most of us take for granted. Please, take this chance to help a child with autism experience success in an environment that often times is overstimulating and out of their reach.
