Shine On with Nook E-Readers

My students need 2 NOOK e-readers and protective covers which will provide instant access to books in the library and foster a love of reading while using technology.

My Students

"Books are lighthouses erected in the great sea of time." Edwin P. Whipple's quote has made me want to help our students "shine" like that lighthouse. The NOOK e-reader will help update and upgrade the books in our Library Media Center and allow us to read new and classic books instantaneously.

We have a great school with a diverse clientle.

My Library Media Center serves 454 low to medium income K-5th grade students including an Autism and Life Skills class. Our free and reduced lunch rate is 53% which does not qualify us for any extra funding. Our students deserve to learn using the latest and greatest technology to prepare them for the future. I remember the excitement of finding a brand new book and checking it out before anyone else. Do you? Unfortunately, our lack of funding has disappointed children when it comes to reading the latest or the classic books. Money only goes so far. The Nook Touch will allow our students to be engaged and excited about reading many great books not available in our Library, while learning through technology. Funding should not be a hindrance to our students or their achievement. The Nook e-reader will allow students to use new technology and read new and classic books while learning to develop the skills needed for their future.

My Project

Nook e-readers combine the love of reading with technology. Students in grades K-5 will be taught to utilize Nook e-readers to help increase their exposure to technology and literature while increasing comprehension and motivating them to read. With the Nook my library students will be able to access quickly millions of books and free resources to become better readers. My goal is to have the NOOK available for use in a book club format with 5th graders first. They will be shown how to use the devices responsibly while enjoying new technologies. As they complete a two week rotation, the students will help train a new crop of book club members. The teaching and learning will trickle down to 4th grade and continue on throughout the school. By offering the Nook we will be able to get books into the hands of students quickly and later make available for checkout. For these reasons, I am requesting two Nook e-readers with protective covers so they may experience the joy of reading.

The donations to this project will help support our students now and in the future.

Technology is not going away. It will offer a form of book that our library currently does not have. My PTO has also promised to purchase two more Nook e-readers when this grant is funded. Reading is all around us. Being able to read a variety of types of literature can open up many doors and opportunities in the lives of our children. Please consider supporting this effort to to help our children shine!
