Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What happened to handmade garments? Heirloom quilts? Homemade gifts? Has our world become too busy to make items that future generations will treasure? I would like to teach my students a skill that is disappearing in our fast moving society.
Our school is located in a small, rural town in Alabama.
We have a very diverse population. The majority of our students receive free/reduced lunches. These students are eager to learn and love to work hands on whenever possible. Our school campus houses K-12 students.
My Project
I want my students to have the knowledge of basic sewing. They should learn how to make a project and be able to sew on a button. Sewing is becoming a lost art and I want my students to make a project they will cherish for years to come. With your help my students will learn how to make a patchwork quilt, puppet and a small stuffed animal. I still have the patchwork quilt that I made in Family and Consumer Science many years ago and I want my students to have the same experiences.
Can you remember something you learned in FACS class?
Or do you have an heirloom that someone made for you? I want my students to be able to say, "YES! I did learn something and was able to make an heirloom to pass on to my children." I don't want them to have to pay someone to sew on their button because they don't know how to thread a needle. Thank you for reading my proposal. I hope you can help me give my students the items they need to learn life long skills.
