My Students

My students need to learn math AND earn some money! This project will have double impact: not only will students learn basic sewing and accounting skills, they will also earn and save money to achieve a goal, such as an end of the year field trip.

I teach a 6th grade class at a school where over 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Very few receive an "allowance" that teaches them to budget money. Our class is very diverse, with many students speaking two languages. They rarely have money for enrichment activities, and they would love to be able to work and earn money. This is also a great beginner experience for gaining the social skills employers want.

My Project

Sixth grade students in our district begin the year with a unit on Economics. This project is a real-world application of those concepts. With a sewing machine from DonorsChoose, students will make and sell unique tote bags or other items. We already have quality upholstery fabric that was donated by ScanHome, a local furniture store. Students will create a budget for the other supplies needed, such as thread and strap fabric. They will also develop a marketing plan. Since we'll only have one machine, students will work in small groups after school to make the products.

Eleven and twelve year-olds don't have many opportunities to earn money.

With this project, the students will have the chance to set a goal and work for it. They may decide to use the money for a field trip or even pay it forward to a charity. They will learn basic math, sewing, accounting, and marketing skills along the way.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
