My students need exciting chapter books to further develop their reading fluency and comprehension, as well as instill in them an active love for reading at an early age.
There’s nothing better than a book you can’t put down. As a child I was hooked on a series of books called “Brownies". We all had books we treasured growing up. My growing readers are ready to dive into longer, detailed books and need quality literature that will challenge and inspire them.
I teach a very special group of second graders in Northeast DC.
I was fortunate enough to teach several of these fabulous students two years ago in Kindergarten so I am very excited to work with such brilliant children again! This is a group of diverse learners who are hungry for knowledge and always eager to learn more. They LOVE reading and were already reading emergent readers in Kindergarten, so I know they will be ready for a new challenge. Chapter books will be new, interesting and exciting for them. In fact, they need the challenge of longer text and more complicated descriptions to continue to improve their reading. However, my second graders will have limited opportunities to read these types of books. While I have several great titles in my personal collection, I don't have nearly enough to properly supply my students. Many of my students do not have these books available at home, so having these books in the classroom is imperative.
My Project
These chapter books with completely transform my students’ school year. Chapter books will provide students with the opportunity to make “movies in their minds” by picturing all the details the author conveys to the reader. Visualizing while reading is an essential skill that will become more and more critical as students progress through school. Encouraging students to do so at an early age will form good reading habits, such as reading the words closely and going back to re-read if the movie in their minds is unclear. Fluency and comprehension will be dramatically affected by having these higher-level books available for all students.
Students will be able to engage in small book groups to recall and review important details, events and characters from the story, improving their retention and comprehension. Students will also learn to construct book reviews and give book recommendations to family and friends. Students will also be able to take the books home, maximizing reading time
It is absolutely essential that students develop critical reading skills develop these formative years.
Strong reading skills are essential for student success throughout school and beyond. Fostering a total love for reading during primary grades is the best way to secure a strong foundation of essential skills. By surrounding kids with quality literature, packed with characters and story lines they can relate to and enjoy, students will love reading and be set up on a path of success!
