Sensory Materials Needed for Special Needs Students-Part 3
My students need sensory materials to include, a trampoline, a seat cushion, sensory balls, and fidget toys to help them attend and focus during class activities.
This coming school year I will be embarking on a new endeavor working with all students who are diagnosed with Autism in a special ASD Horizon program.
My students are special education third-graders, at a diverse Title I (about 70% of students are entitled to free lunch) community public school in Queens, New York.
They have been diagnosed with Autism. My students are in a special ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) Horizon program. This program is going into its second year at my school and I will have the pleasure of working with these children in my classroom. There are presently 6 students in my self-contained class this coming school year. The purpose of the Horizon class is to help my students gain the necessary skills they need to be able to function in the general education environment, and to eventually be able to attend a class with general education students.
My Project
Materials are hard to come by. We often have to share among classrooms and when you really need these materials they are being used. I would like to have the necessary materials in my own classroom to guide my students who have sensory processing difficulties, behavioral difficulties, and difficulties attending to task. Some of the items I would like are a trampoline, seat cushion, sensory balls, and fidget toys. These items will greatly impact my students by allowing them to gain body awareness and teach them how to appropriately behave when they are overstimulated. There will be a Break Area in my room where my students can go when they are feeling overwhelmed. These materials will be available to them at any time. This in turn will improve their overall class functioning and will keep them on task and focused. All of these materials will greatly improve my students' ability to function in a class setting, which is why I am requesting them for this new Horizon class.
Please help my students be more independent in their school environment by providing them the necessary means to help them improve their overall body awareness.
Having these materials readily available will be a great factor in developing their skills.
