"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
My students are twenty-two amazing six and seven year olds whom I am absolutely blessed by each and everyday.
We are in an extremely low, socio-economic environment, so not all of my students have the things and luxuries that others have. They do not all have computers at home, nor do they all have hands-on learning materials they need to help them excel. I firmly believe that it is vital to create and foster a strong and loving classroom environment. For that reason, I set my room up with a homey feel. My goal was to create a learning environment they felt comfortable in so that they would want to be there. In my class, the set up is student centered, so I do not have a traditional teacher desk. I would rather utilize the limited space we have for the students. Each of my amazing twenty-two first graders has his and/her own unique personality. We are not just a class, we are my Hoppin' Good First Grade Family and we are winners in every way!
My Project
Research shows that children need to move. Some children more so than others! So many students deal with attention, sensory, or focusing issues and all materials in this project will help those students move while still being able to complete the academic tasks at hand. The Wobble Stools will be utilized at our small group reading table so that students will be able to move while we work in small group. The Wobble Chair pads will be utilized for students who need them at or in their seats so that they can wiggle while they work! The sensory toys and Fidgets will be utilized by students who need them during whole group instruction to keep their hands busy.

Children need to move and the supplies in this project will allow them to do so while still being engaged in the learning process.
