FeMale (Iron Man) Robotics ~ we are a group of ten 4th-8th grade inner-city girls who work hard, have fun, and are learning to build and program a robot. You can help us prepare for our first LEGO League competition next year by obtaining a Space Challenge Set to practice in the off season!
My students are Kindergarten through 8th graders in an urban, extreme poverty public school in Ohio.
My school acts as a "hub" to the community and provides needed resources to the community with a partnership with the United Way. Many students do not come to school with the necessary supplies to be successful, and many parents are not able to assist with homework, study skills, and a good work ethic. My school recently went through a transformation, with the entire staff new, and teachers all interviewed to teach in this environment. Every teacher is here because we WANT to be! I am now the Science Support teacher in a newly created STEM lab. I am working with students to learn with Project-Based Inquiry Science. I am lucky enough to see every student in my building and love what I do!
With the Space Challenge Set and Activity Pack, my robotics team will get an instant adventure in space! The challenge will give us the opportunity to learn the basics of gears, so students can build effective robots applying knowledge of physical science and mathematical principles. Nine individual Learning Missions in the challenge will encourage my students to investigate, observe, calculate, and apply knowledge to solve specific tasks. Seven individual missions will challenge students to apply and creatively adapt programming and problem-solving skills to construct robots that solve actual space-exploration challenges. This will be similar to the missions students will be expected to complete in the regular FLL season.
My students are told every day that girls are a minority in the STEM fields, and they are very capable of stepping into these roles.
A zip code or socio-economic status cannot hold us back; my girls are deserving and will grow from these opportunities. Thank you for considering us in your donation!
