In our classroom, students critically think about the past in order to make sense of the present. In so doing, they are better equipped for future participation in American democracy.
I teach in an urban alternative high school.
The majority of my students are low income. Many speak a language other than English at home. Many have learning disabilities or face other challenges to their education, like homelessness. Despite frequent difficulties, my students believe in the American dream and the power of education to transform their lives.
As a teacher, I strive to empower my students to achieve. In addition to building their critical thinking and literary skills, it is my function to help students find positive ways to engage in their communities. When students see their own stories reflected in the U.S. History curriculum, they are more likely to understand their own unique contribution to the American story.
My Project
Howard Zinn's book, "A Young People's History of the United States" tells the story of a diverse and culturally rich America. It accurately relates the contribution of ordinary men and women from all walks of life as part of the great American narrative. When viewed through this lens, my students feel invested in their country and community.
Your contribution to our classroom will make a tremendous impact on my students.
My students have never had a textbook. Classroom resources are hard to come by! The experience of holding and reading a textbook that celebrates American diversity will validate my students' experience as students of history and American citizens.
