Imagine sitting in a classroom as a student in a different country. You may pick up some words here and there, but most of the dialogue is unknown to you. Pictures and videos make a world of difference when language learners are learning a language and developing vocabulary.
Welcome to Pre-K!
Come on in! We ask that you be respectful to those around you as well as the materials you play with. Language isn't an issue here; we're confident you'll pick it up quickly. We learn through play and exploration so you're required to bring your curiosity and imagination. Have fun!
Our kids are young, ambitious, and curious, but there's darkness lurking about that's much too serious. Pre-K is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day. But the trouble that's looming seems to be blooming. Academic rigor! Academic rigor! They're telling us to grow up much, much quicker. They want to prepare us to be college ready. We want to go to college, but at a pace that's steady.
Our parents can't help us out of the troubles that's lurking; it's not their fault! They're too busy working! It's up to you to help us keep our childhood we're about to lose, you wonderful people, the people of DonorsChoose!
My Project
My class is filled with pre-k students that are English language learners. Maintaining the attention of language learners is hard; keeping the attention of four-year-old children is even harder. With the combination of the two, I have a short window of opportunity when I have my students' attention to discuss or teach a topic.
The use of the document camera and camcorder during the use of specific topics that may seem dry to my students will help maintain their attention and focus much longer. It will make learning language more meaningful since the use of pictures and video will give visuals during class discussions.
The document camera will help enlarge photos onto a projector for everyone to see. The camcorder will be used to record and document students during play centers. Crucial conversations will be recorded along with their interactions with materials and peers. These recordings will be analyzed and discussed with everyone during whole group discussions.
The majority of my students are English language learners.
During whole group lessons, I only have a handful that is willing to participate. Our discussions are not being understood by every child. These materials will help give visuals to our language learners and will allow them to understand our discussion and learn vocabulary necessary to develop the language. Your support will help engage all of my students in discussions so whole group lessons will involve the entire group, not just some.
