Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students rarely get the opportunity to sculpt with clay. It is a luxury and usually impractical to spend our budget on such materials. I know that if we can afford to share with them this medium our upper level classes will improve and my students can develop into better 3D artists.
We are a Title 1 school in North Las Vegas, NV.
We have many students that are in a constant transient state. They lack confidence in the school setting. Our art department is trying to build a program that is welcoming, interesting, and professional.
We have seen many students that struggle in attendance. These students find a home in the art department and succeed in school because they want to succeed in visual art.
My Project
The polymer clay is a more practical version of clay in my classroom. It does not require a kiln. I does not create a dusty classroom. Because most polymer clay projects are small it does not cause a storage issue.
We will be using the clay to study portraiture like the Easter Island heads. This will tie to art history and cultural diversity in art. We will also use the polymer clay for a unit on beads and jewelry.
This project will enrich my classroom and introduce my students to a product that can be used to enhance presentations, make gifts, and open opportunities of creativity.
Most of my students have large families and one of my favorite experiences is when students teach their younger siblings things they learn in my classroom. Sculpey clay is affordable and easy enough to find that my students can continue working with it outside of the classroom.
