Keeping middle school students engaged in, and excited about, mathematics can be a challenge. Having access to apps that increase procedural fluency without feeling like they are participating in a drill would be amazing.
I teach seventh grade math at a middle school in Northern California.
While most of our students come from well-educated, involved families, some of our students do not have access to technology in their home environment. For these students, school is the place where they are learning how to use sites such as Khan Academy to enhance their learning.
My Project
I am particularly excited about having my students create screencasts to demonstrate their learning of mathematics. This is something I have tried in the past but with only two ipads available, the project took a tremendous amount of time and it was hard to maintain the thread of learning. In screencasting, students create their own mathematics problems and then show how to solve these problems by writing with a stylus, adding text, pictures, and voice. We plan to create a class website of student screencasts by topic. The Common Core Standards for Mathematics emphasizes mathematical discourse. Students are encourages to "construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others." This project will provide opportunities for students to practice the academic language of mathematics.
By having ipads available on a daily basis, students will be more engaged in their study of mathematics.
Whether creating a screencast, practicing a concept on an app, or watching videos on Khan academy, students will be able to work on the concepts they need as individuals.
