Most of my students have gone through life without being excited by education, but in this class, students are ready to learn about the world around them and they can't wait to get started!
I teach physical science and chemistry in a high poverty area.
We don't have many classroom materials, and the students need materials to do hands on projects so they can teach themselves about the world. My students also come from military families, which means they are moving around constantly. That being said, this community is very transient which means our school does not receive a lot of funding. At our school, we focus on the students and their needs, and we are especially focused on STEM classes that get students interested in science and math.
My Project
These materials will greatly help the students in my classes - they will impact over 200 students! The simple machine kits will be used as an inquiry lab in which students are asked to create levers, wedges, or pulleys. The students will then use the markers to teach the other students in the class about the machine that they just built. The chair will be used as part of a game where the student who sits in the chair must build a machine as fast as possible in order to get points, and the candy will be given out during the game to promote student achievement. Once these materials are in the classroom, my students will have everything they need to succeed for this section of the course.
At my high school, we have limited supplies and a limited budget to purchase materials.
My students would greatly benefit from having some extra materials they can use to interact with and engage with the materials. By donating to this project you will be helping over 200 students to become more interested in science as well as take initiative over their own learning. This will hopefully get students to be more likely to select career paths that are related to the sciences!
