Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excitable, adventurous and courageous explorers. They are especially engaged when they're playing with magnetic wands, ice, shovels and dirt, the water table, binoculars, and kinetic sand, They have demonstrated interests in science and I want to expand their learning experiences.
I teach a preschool special education class which is all boys.
Some of my students are children living with ADHD and autism and are often overwhelmed by activities that take a long time to complete. Funding this project will provide them with tangible, highly interesting, and easy to operate toys. These learning tools will help them develop their ability to focus, and help them extend the amount of time they spend participating in group activities. Our classroom is beginning it's second year as a new program. We inherited some toys from the previous teacher, but most of the tool kits, puzzles, and games were missing pieces and parts, or were in poor condition. Our classroom is a preschool for all learners program in Los Angeles. We are a title-one school, and all though we have limited funding and resources, our students and parents are supportive and enjoy learning. Our school has a climate of positive behavior support, and we are encouraged to explore our creativity and curiosity.
My Project
My students will use the science viewers to practice fine motor hand/eye coordination; as they have to pull a lever to create a slide show and insert viewing cards. This activity will also promote my students to expand their language by asking questions and making comments about what they see. The science tool kit will help my class form questions, hypothesis/predictions, and conclusions, about physical science; using droppers, magnifying glasses, goggles, magnets, etc.. I will use the life cycle posters to demonstrate lessons about animals along with the animal-skin matching cards. The life science posters are especially helpful because we are an inner-city school with very limited access to wildlife. Lastly, I will use the building kits to teach concepts in gravity, balance, weight, measurement, and how to use and operate a pulley-system. The pulley-system is a tool I especially enjoy, because we have made amateur pulleys using recyclables and string. My class will benefit greatly!
These donations will help us have an adequate science center.
My students like exploring textures and greatly enjoy our learning-units on earth/life science. When they come to school it is nice to see them react to new concepts like how to move magnetic balls frozen in ice cubes. Or creating binoculars with toilet paper rings. I KNOW they will take pride in our new science tools and activities, because they will be interested and engaged in learning with developmentally appropriate toys.
