My environmental science students (7th and 8th Graders) are busy creating an outdoor garden classroom. We need some supplies in order maintain this outdoor space. With these simple supplies we hope to create a space that ALL teachers and students at the school will love.
Middle school students spend most of their day cooped up inside, forced to stay seated and totally silent, and (if they're like me in middle school) looking out the window wishing they could be "out there." Allowing students to move freely and be outside has positive benefits on the rest of their educational experience, by increasing focus and concentration throughout the rest of their school day, far above and beyond the valuable lessons that can be learned in the outside world.
We are inspiring a love of the environment and hands on science in this unique outdoor learning space.
My Project
We are requesting pitchforks and worms to assist in maintaining the compost pile. We are currently composting with the cafeteria and foods room, but hope to start composting with all the students at lunch this year. We are requesting pruners to help with the collections of edibles, seeds, and flowers. We are requesting watering supplies to augment and replace our well used and reused hoses and watering cans. We are also requesting seeds and growing supplies to help us continue to grow healthy organic veggies and fruits from seeds.
This year we hope to continue the trend of all students having a chance to use and appreciate this space.
From art to English, from history to science, all subject matters can be taught in this unique outdoor environment, and hopefully the space can inspire students for years to come. Now that the classroom and basic foundation has been completed, we hope to see more and more teachers at our school teaching classes in this outdoor classroom. We just need supplies to keep it healthy and growing.
