My Students

"Why do we have to learn about this?" This is the question we constantly hear during the teaching of science. We use non-fiction periodicals to help our students (at every level) make the connections between what we learn in school and how it can be used in the real world.

Being the only intermediate school in our school system, we have every type of student population imaginable.

This means our teachers work that much harder to insure we meet the needs of every student in our school. The teachers in our school have worked hard TOGETHER to insure (1) we fully cover all of our required curriculum, (2) we are able to meet the needs of every type of learner at every level, (3) we make connections of learning with the real world, (4) our students work collaboratively in the learning process, and (5) we make every lesson fun, engaging, and meaningful. The students of our school truly care for one another. I have never seen another school where collaboration is the norm. Our students work together to insure each and every student is successful. This has been the driving force within our school community.

My Project

Through the years, I have found that the use of periodicals to be the best method to make connections between the curriculum and the real world. Our school has made a recent push for more non-fiction reading. I have found that students at the 6th grade level love learning more about the world outside of their bubble. I also find that getting students to learn more about science in the real world improves their interest in professions involving science. The Scholastic magazines would be used as supplemental exploration and discovery. Independent reading and exploration time will be given each week to our students. They will read periodicals that will give them real-world connections to the curriculum. These will be used as independent reading, collaborative pairs, or even group discussion activities. The wonderful part of using the Scholastic magazine is that (1) students can choose articles that interest them and (2) the magazines will appeal to all levels of readers and learners.

In our current society, there is a push for our students to be more aware of the world around them and to prepare them for future careers.

As a science teacher, I work hard to help students find their love of science and show them how they can turn that love of science into a future career. Thank you for your consideration.
