Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day. Students need to know what is going on in the world in order to change it. This magazine will give them ideas about the current world trends.

My students attend a Title One school in an environment that is geared toward college preparation.

They are from the inner city and predominantly Latino and African American, second generation students from a low-socio-economic background. The student demographic does not define them in my classes as I help them to see that they have a future and a hope. These student deserve the same chances as their contemporaries and are willing to work hard to get those opportunities and to be a benefit to the world around them.

My Project

The New York Times is a beacon to the world and puts a spotlight on things that are happening in finance, society and in the world. Students have the internet at their fingertips but reading these magazines could provide material which is current rather than dated material which only focuses on history which is often repeated. In this magazine students can not only read about their environments but also in the greater society and learn how they can play a part in the world. The materials will be used to inspire the students to research, investigate and utilize resources which they wouldn't ordinarily have. As a teacher I will also use the materials to teach students that history, literature and the arts is happening all around us.

The impact that news and information has on students is amazing.

Students are constantly astounded that social injustices are still happening in the world. They are just as shocked to find that there is still good in the world. Students will learn inventive techniques and read real hard hitting stories which will help them want to learn more about the world around them. This project is very important because it will be a catalyst to students as they learn to write as reporters.
