Scales For Students

My students need 5 scales for the chemistry unit they will be studying. To take accurate measurements students need scales that they can use!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine studying density and trying to make sense of mass? I can hear the students questions: What is mass? How much mass is in this object? Why do we need to understand mass? Okay! Hold on: We need to figure out mass of objects to study its density, to find out what the material is!

I teach science to seventh and eighth grade students.

The eighth grade students are studying physical science as part of their preparation for high school. About 90% of the students participate in the free-lunch program! But this does not damper their enthusiasm for learning and new experiences. Wouldn't you remember how to determine mass if you actually found the mass of the object? I can see the students not just comparing the mass of two identical (physical only) cylinders but also other objects that look similar. These students are curious and want to investigate, not just the lab, but the world around them. How does what they learn in class apply to their world? These students will take what they learn a step further and apply it to their world. Their world is more meaningful to them and if they can apply the science learned in class to their world then I am happy. It is exciting to see the students investigate and I know they will take the scales to the highest level.

My Project

Will scales change students' lives for the better? Absolutely! The students, as I mentioned earlier, are a curious group. By having the scales and measuring mass of solids, students will now be adding to their frame of reference, mass. What an interesting concept, to be able to understand mass but also to be able to explain the density of an object. Take mass a step further and the students will understand density. Density a characteristic of determining what a materials is made of. Possibly the students might want to consider being a material scientist in the future!

By having scales in the classroom, students will have an opportunity to experience how to measure mass of an object.

Is this important? Not the mass of the object but the experience is priceless. I believe by giving the experience to students opens many doors for the students. The experience gives the students an opportunity that should not be denied. Hopefully this little part will open many opportunities for the students! Give to the future and thank you from teachers. Help us inspire!
