My students need a service professional come and service our reef from May to September and add a blue tang fish so that students will come back to school to a live reef.
We are the Francis Ocean, and what's an ocean without a proper coral reef? All year long we have been learning from our beautiful, salt water aquarium. Now that summer is here, we don't want to lose what we've built like we did last summer.
I have 23 enthusiastic learners in my first grade class.
I have students who love to learn in so many different ways. One way that is special to our class is our salt water tank. We have all loved watching and learning about the ocean, and sharing it with other classes in the school.
I have students who have learning disabilities that cause them to need more help in order to be able to read or do math. Our school has students who are refugees, military families, English as their second language, and range from low to high income. Our students take pride in their education and work very hard to excel. When students struggle, the whole faculty and staff work together to help those students succeed. We do the same with students who are excelling above grade level.
My Project
Two years ago we started our class reef and when school was about to end, it was really starting to take shape! We had many different corals, fish, crabs, snails, etc. Each week, during the summer, I would come in and tend to the tank to make sure that it would be there for us the following year. I went away for 1 week and over that time we had a failure that ended up killing off everything but the rock and the sand. Needless to say, we do not want that to happen again.
I have been working with Upgrade Your Reef this year and he helps tend other aquariums in other schools. After speaking with him, we decided that in order to keep the beautiful coral reef with livestock now, I need some additional help throughout the summer. We have made a plan for him to come and take care of the tank to make sure we don't have to start over again next year.
He is also going to bring us a blue tang, aka Dory. Our class theme is "Just Keep Swimming," and having Dory just makes sense.
Without this, I worry that next year's students will come to a very dreary and dead tank.
I don't want to lose our 2 clown fish, yellow tang, cardinal, cleaner shrimp, 2 anemones, pulsing xenia, and snails and crabs. This project will make sure that when we come back at the end of August, we have a tank ready for school, just like my new students. My current students have gotten attached to our livestock and we know their personalities. Please help save our coral reef by donating today!
