Roseland Elementary Girls Volleyball Teams

My students need 18 new volleyballs and 2 mesh bags for the season, because we don't have any left.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know how hard it is to have a volleyball practice with only 3 balls for 60 girls? Every season we have more girls tryout who are ready to work hard and train as an athlete. Unfortunately, we find ourselves with the challenge of not having enough PE equipment to support two dedicated teams.

We teach at a school where 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

In today's economy, our student's families are struggling to make ends meet. Our students often go home to empty houses, while their parents are working long hours in order to provide for their basic needs. For the past two volleyball seasons, we have coached 60 girls on two volleyball teams that have a true passion for the game, their team, their school, and us as their coaches. We, as their coaches, not only focus on the sport, but we also worry about their basic needs. We often find ourselves providing snacks, socks, and proper volleyball attire. Our girls constantly were asking us to have practice on Saturdays and to stay late after practice. They are dedicated to the sport and despite our lack of equipment, we have earned 1st and 3rd place two years in a row.

My Project

Part of our mission statement at our school is Heart, and our players have a lot of Heart. As coaches, we have High Expectations for our players on and off the court. It is disheartening to watch these girls come out and want to be part of a team, when we are not able to provide the necessary equipment they need to be confident, successful young ladies. It is embarrassing to meet up with opposing teams and have only three dirty, worn out balls to warm up with. We provide socks, hair ribbons, and fund raise so that they have appropriate shoes, but of course our personal funds are limited. You'd be amazed what a few quality volleyballs could take these girls.

Part of being a good coach is instilling pride into your players.

We want these young ladies to be confident athletes, but more importantly to take that confidence and to be able to make proper decisions in their future. Part of feeling good about yourself is being able to walk on that court and not feel that the opposing team is better than you. We go out of our way to build our girls confidence. We are hoping that there is someone else out there, with as much passion, that can support our team.
