My students need 3 sphero robots and two littlebits kits to explore and develop enthusiasm for coding, inventing, and designing, instilling a love of creating in all.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Students engaged in direct experience with materials, unforeseen obstacles, and serendipitous discoveries may result in understanding never anticipated by the teacher.”
― Sylvia Libow Martinez
Wow! Students discover new learning through exploration and mistakes = real lifelong learning.
The students who will benefit from this opportunity are excited to try new things, however the desire to create is one that needs to be encouraged.
Students love to hear that we are going to be creating something, not just a craft, but something that is exploring a new topic. Students want to explore ideas that allow them to use their hands and coding and inventing is a great way for that to happen. Asking them to imagine, asking them to work with their hands is something that I want to do every day. These students need to have the opportunities to explore, create, and build. My 470 students come from a limited English background and are almost 95% free and reduced lunch. In Northern Indiana, we have students who want to succeed, who want to create and impact others around them. The learning this opportunity provides won't stop at the end of the day, but continue for many years to come. The excitement of inventing and making something work creates a true model of life long learning.
My Project
Helping students to understand coding comes down to can it be hands on. The sphero robots allow for students to quickly and efficiently try codes and put them into affect right away. Students will be able to create multiple codes and see how the robots respond. When something moves and you see the smile on the students face you know that they have figured something out. Coding involves so many different types of thinking and different subject areas. Students will be using the littlebits kits to help them see how physical blocks can be put together to create an invention. Henry Ford put together many inventions, not through just visualizing it, but by piecing something together. Students need to see how a physical block, when stuck with another block, can create a circuit or code that can bring an invention alive. These designers will use both the robots and littlebit kits to help understand coding, but more importantly, to instill deep levels of thinking through play.
These sphero robots and littlebit kits will make an incredible impact on the students who come through our school every day.
Giving students the opportunities to create, design, and play with coding kits will bring about a sense of enjoyment when using multiple skill areas. Think about the joy you get when you create a story, drawing, piece of art, or solve a puzzle. That's what we want to instill in our students. Through your generous support you can help to create designers for the future.
