Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine having to ask kids not to race to the class library or hearing their sighs of disappointment when they weren't able to check out the one they have been waiting for--again? For some of my students, their only access to books is the classroom library or school book fairs.

Most of my kids are pretty good readers.

They are readily excited by read-alouds which I use to tempt them to try good books that they may not be familiar with. Our group this year prefers adventure/survival fiction, with fantasy and realistic fiction about kids their own age running a strong second. Our school is in an inner city urban area in a high poverty neighborhood so there are lots of things we need but my students are especially enthusiastic about learning and our parents are eager to help out.

My Project

Why these books? As a class we thought about the types of genres we like to read and took a survey. Then I found famous and well-reviewed books that fit those genres. Lastly, I gave students a little bit of the plots involved to whet their appetites. We are really excited about these novels! I've found that done properly reading a book with a class can inspire students to finish the series on their own, or to read in a genre they've never read before. It motivates strong readers and gives weaker readers the support they need to reach the end. Nothing succeeds like sharing a good book with a child. They always ask for more.

We'd love to have your support.

Your donations will spark an interest in reading that can last a lifetime. It will help bolster comprehension skills and build cultural knowledge and vocabulary; all these things are essential to success in school and in life. And to think, you can do all this with reading!
