My Students

Please help us "launch" our way into the study of quadratics! We are lacking some necessary supplies in order to conduct an activity using our straw rocket launchers that will coincide with our unit on quadratic equations.

My middle school students are enrolled in a public magnet school and come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Students need hands-on activities to help them make sense of the abstract concepts they learn in algebra and become more engaged when they are allowed to work collaboratively with their peers on projects that apply the mathematics being studied in class.

My Project

In "3-2-1 Blast Off", students will launch straw rockets and collect data from their projectile that models a quadratic equation. Students will graph their data and formulate an equation to be used for analysis. In order to conduct the activity, we need some supplies, such as modeling clay for the nose cones on the straw rockets. We also will need some butcher paper and ink stamp pads that will record their launches. And lastly, they will need tape measures to measure each distance and height of the projectile.

Middle school students need a real-world application to help them make a connection and build their understanding of concepts in algebra.

In our study of quadratic equations, I would like to use our rocket launchers, but we need some supplies. Please help us, so that my students will be able to "blast-off" in their understanding of quadratics!
