Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from economically, disadvantaged homes. Providing them with the opportunity to compete in the US First Robotics Competition has inspired many of them with an interest in science, math, and computer science.
Our student body is very diverse.
We have military kids, International Baccalaureate students, AVID students, students of all levels of learning, students from many walks of life, however the majority of the students have one thing that pulls them all together; they come from economically disadvantaged homes. Our school works hard to promote learning across the board. Our students have risen to meet these demands. The only thing they have asked of us it to not just stand there and lecture. To make the lessons as entertaining as well as educational. Our robotics team takes the lessons learned in class and connects them to real world challenges.
My Project
It doesn't matter where you come from, building a robot is just plain cool. Being able to build a robot requires certain things. Two things needed are a will and desire. These have been provided by my students. They have both of them. What we don't have is a a white board to use during the group meeting for designing the robot. Our current classroom has an old chalk board that isn't fit to write on. They have been using pen and paper, but it isn't proving to be effective or efficient when we are brain storming and designing as a whole group.
Inspiring students, no matter where they are from, to take serious looks at science and math professions is very tough.
Giving students the ability to create robots, to use the knowledge they are learning in science and math classes is a rare opportunity. Not having the materials should not be an issue. Please help us bring our students in contact with the professions of tomorrow, today.
