Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The FIRST Robotics competition includes students from all ability levels. The portion of the competition we are focusing on with this request is the spirit portion. Students will create banners, flags, and buttons to show team spirit. They will swap buttons with teams from throughout the country.
My students are tackling this large project with a very little budget.
Every little bit counts for us. We did not fund out about this opportunity as soon as other teams and have not been able to secure sponsorships or mass funding. The typical season can run a team more than $20,000. We have less than $11,000. This machine would help the spirit portion of our team to begin to fully prepare for competition. Their goal is to create 2000 buttons.
During the course of this competition my students have been pulled beyond their comfort zones and have learned about technology and cooperation while learning to compete.
My Project
FIRST Robotics inspires students to think about science, math, technology, business, funding, and team unity. It involves the student as a whole. We are building a robot, yes, but we are building futures first. The students will learn things through participation in this program that will last them a lifetime. It will allow students to have contact with professionals in fields they have never considered. It will provide students an opportunity to be successful.
The entire competition puts the students under a time limit to create a budget, a business plan, build a robot, and show their spirit. The competition is a mix between a rock star, a super bowl, and an academic meet.
High school students have few opportunities to participate in something that is on this grand of scale that does not require them to be super athletes.
This competition requires them to want... to want to learn, to want to work, to want to succeed, to want to face a challenge, to want to step outside their comfort zone and embrace science, math, technology, business, and each other.
