My students need 24 reams of white printer paper. My students need 15 book boxes. My students need diverse and inspiring books on different reading levels.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In my position, I have many roles that I play on a daily basis. I am an interventionist that works with students on improving their attendance and behavior along with bettering their reading and math scores. It is a position that I work with students kindergarten through the sixth grade.
Our school participates in the Leader In Me program along with the Positive Behavior Intervention Support program.
With our school using both of these programs, we are teaching the students how to find the leader within themselves and the teachers are using positive interventions to better the behavior within the classrooms and within the school. My students come from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds and we have a lot of family diversity. All of our students qualify for free breakfast, lunch and snack through a grant the district receives due to the poverty level of our families. The students are prominently African-American however, we do have a mixture of Caucasian and Bi-Racial also. The academic level of the students I work with range from students that are 3 grade levels below their current grade level to students that are 3 or more grade levels above their current grade level.
My Project
After coming back from Summer Break, I met with my students that were in my reading groups the previous year. I asked if they read over the summer. The responses I received made me realize where our school is failing our students. My students would respond with their family members were working and could not make it to the library and/or they would tell me they read the 1 or 2 books they have at their house. This was the response of over half of my students!
By using these books in my classroom, my goal is to then give the children the books to take home and they will have the option of either keeping the book or they can bring it back and trade it in for another one. Also, my principal bought me a subscription to A-Z.com where I can print off different genres of books on different reading levels and make multiple copies. Currently I use these in my reading groups but my vision is to make more copies of the books my students like and they will be able to take them home and keep them
The donations of the reams of paper and paperback books will improve my students' lives by having more than 1 or 2 books to read at their homes and with their families.
The paperback books I chose have diverse characters and/or inspiring with past and present leaders along with stories about different interests of my students. I think my students' families will enjoy reading the books together and it will advocate for reading every night with their children.
