My Students

The 73 students in my classroom this year need access to books they want to read. When conducting reading interviews, I realized a my classroom library has some shortcomings. Many of my students enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction and poetry. My current library has little to offer these students.

The 73 sixth graders attend a rural elementary school in North Carolina.

We are a Title 1 school because a significant percentage of our students are economically disadvantaged. Our school is the center of the community and parents of students often turn to our school when they are in need. Many of the students in my classroom have declared a dislike for reading during their reading interviews. Sixth graders in our community often spend time playing sports, hunting and attending church. Many of the students shared during their reading interview that they have never read a book they enjoyed.

My Project

I gave a survey at the beginning of the school year to find out more about my students' reading habits and interest in reading. I was shocked to find more than half of them had read less than five books last year. I knew I was facing a huge challenge and to become better readers they needed practice reading. My question was, "How am I going to get all of these reluctant readers reading?" I knew I had to do something completely different than what had been done in the years past because that had not worked. This group is well known for their consistent poor performance on End-of-Grade tests in spite of nothing less than average IQ scores. These students needed to be motivated to read and discuss books.

This is where you come in the picture, your donation of a variety of high interest books will allow the children in my classroom a chance to explore the joys of reading.

The children will be so eager to open the pages of these brand new books, we will literally have to create waiting lists. Additionally, I have requested fantasy, science fiction and poetry--all genres that interest my students! Thank you for your support!
